DIET DOCTOR #27

When and how much glutamine should I take?

Q: Currently I take 4500 mg of glutamine with my protein shake immediately post weight workouts. I've read articles though that suggest taking 4500mg 4 times a day every day. Is this something I should consider? Or should I step up to taking the 4500mg once day everyday? My glutamine says on it to take it 1 hour before a workout and immediately after a workout. Should I do this? I’m very confused?

A: Glutamine is a great amino acid to supplement with because it provides so many benefits. It enhances muscle recovery, builds muscle and strength, helps with fat burning, increases energy during workouts, and helps to keep your immune system functioning at full force. Glutamine works best when you take it at high doses multiple times per day. So yes, I definitely recommend that you take it four times per day. Go with 4500 mg to up to 10 grams of glutamine with breakfast, within 30 minutes before workouts with your preworkout shake, within 30 minutes after workouts with your postworkout shake and with the last meal of the day. If you want to increase your dose from 4500 mg, do so slowly. Taking large doses of glutamine can cause stomach distress. So give your GI system time to get used to this amino acid.
